A laminar air flow workstation uses a HEPA filtration system to provide a sterile environment for delicate procedures. It reduces turbulence and particle pollution by providing unidirectional airflow at 0.4–0.6 m/s. Although it shields goods from environmental pollutants, it does not provide the user with personal protection.

The vertical airflow cabinet is the most popular laminar airflow model which draws room air through a top-mounted HEPA filter. The Biosafety Cabinet (BSC) Class II, Type A2, is a specialised safety device designed to provide maximum protection for personnel, products, and the environment from hazardous contaminants.
